Overview

A delicious Southern classic

A staple for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Chicken fried chicken can be enjoyed with eggs, mashed potatoes, broccoli – the list is truly endless. This Spice Key recipe uses simple ingredients to create explosive flavors that are sure to delight any palette.

Ingredients

For Chicken Fried Chicken

4 Chicken Breasts

1 tsp Baking Powder

2 tsp Salt

1 tsp Garlic Powder

1.5 cup Buttermilk

Oil for frying

3 cups Flour

1 tsp Baking Soda

2 tsp Pepper

1 Egg

1 Tbsp Hot Sauce

For Gravy

1 stick Butter

1 cup Milk

1.5 cup Flour

Salt & Pepper (to taste)

Instructions

Step 1

In a large bowl mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, pepper, and garlic powder

Step 2

In a separate bowl mix together the buttermilk, egg, and hot sauce (don’t worry, the hot sauce doesn’t add spice to the recipe, but adds a level of flavor that is incredible!)

Step 3

Pound your chicken breasts flat in a resealable bag – this ensures an even cook when frying

Step 4

Dredge the chicken breasts in the flour mixture (ensuring it’s well coated), dip into the egg mixture, then back into the flour mix – when doing the second dip into the flour mix be sure to well coat and “pat” the flour on to all parts of the chicken

Step 5

Heat your oil on a medium heat till it reaches 375° – the oil should go up at least halfway on the chicken (you can also do the “toothpick test” in your oil to ensure it’s at the right heat – stick a toothpick in the oil and if it’s ready it will immediately bubble – if it doesn’t bubble, it’s not ready yet)

Step 6

Add your chicken to the oil and fry 3 – 4 minutes on each side – the chicken should reach an internal temperature of at least 165° (when the chicken is done, take it out of the oil and set on a paper towel lined plate)

Step 7

Gravy time! In a small sauce pan melt your stick of butter

Step 8

Once the butter has melted add in your flour, a quarter at a time, constantly mixing

Step 9

Add in your milk, a quarter at a time, constantly mixing – you will start to see the gravy really thicken up at this point

Step 10

Salt and pepper your gravy to your desired taste

Serve!

Plate your cooked chicken topped with gravy and pair with your favorite sides
